Like, “Isn’t that the old tech your grandpa used to back up a cassette player?” Yeah, I get it—when I first got into the storage game, I wrote tape off as something relics hoarded by old IT guys in dusty server rooms. But let’s be real: I work at a storage provider, and we sell tape to more clients now than we did five years ago. Turns out, this stuff isn’t dead—it’s just got a way better rep now, and it solves problems that nothing else on the market can.

First off, let’s cut through the hype around flash and cloud, ‘cause everyone’s been talking about those like they’re the only kids at the party. Flash is fast, obviously—perfect for the data you access every day, like your company’s current sales reports or customer accounts. Cloud is handy too, for remote access and basic backups. But tape? It’s the quiet workhorse that no one shouts about, but that holds everything together when the chips are down.

Let’s start with the big one: long-term cold storage. You know how every business has data they have to keep, but will literally never look at again? Like, compliance records for the last seven years, old project archives, medical files that need to be retained for regulatory stuff, or even that viral marketing campaign you ran in 2019 that you might need to reference for a case study someday. All that stuff doesn’t need to be sitting on expensive flash drives or taking up space in a cloud server—you pay for storage every month, right? Tape’s different. Once you archive data to tape, you just store the tapes in a secure, climate-controlled place, and you only pay for the tape itself and the occasional drive to read it. Our clients save upwards of 70% on their long-term storage costs when they switch from cloud or primary storage to tape for this stuff. That’s not chump change—for a mid-sized company, that’s tens of thousands of bucks a year they can put toward hiring more engineers or upgrading their actual day-to-day systems.

Then there’s disaster recovery (DR) and offline backups. A lot of people think, “Wait, backups are just copies in the cloud, right?” But what happens if someone hacks your cloud provider? Or if there’s a ransomware attack that gets into every connected system? We’ve seen it happen—clients thought their cloud backups were safe, until the attackers got through the security and encrypted every single file, including the backups. Tape solves that ‘cause it’s offline by nature. You write the backup to a tape, take it off-site (or lock it in a fireproof safe in your own office), and it’s not connected to any network. So even if every other system in your company gets compromised, that tape’s still untouched. We had a healthcare client a couple years back that got hit with a ransomware attack that locked their entire hospital network—everything except their tape backup. They were able to restore all patient records in less than 12 hours, which is the difference between getting fined by HIPAA and keeping their doors open. That’s the kind of thing you can’t put a price on, and tape is the only reliable way to do it right now.

Wait, and let’s not forget about bulk data transfers. Suppose you’ve got a university that just finished a decade-long astronomy study—they’ve got 100 petabytes of telescope data they need to move from their old lab to a new one, or send to a research partner across the country. Trying to send that over the internet? That would take months, if not years, ‘cause most office and lab internet connections are way too slow. Cloud transfer services? They cap out at like 10 Gbps for most people, so moving 100 PB would take literal years. Tape’s portable—you can stick a rack of high-capacity LTO tapes in a truck, drive them there, and plug them into a drive. We’ve had clients move 50 petabytes in less than a day with this method. No downtime, no internet fees, no waiting for your transfer to finish when your team actually needs the data. It’s way more efficient for massive bulk moves than any other tech out there.

Also, a lot of industries have super specific needs that tape checks all the boxes for. Entertainment, for example—film studios have terabytes of raw footage from movies and shows they’re making. They need that footage to be stable for decades, right? ‘Cause when they re-release a movie in 4K or remaster it in 10 years, they don’t want the old digital files to corrupt. Tape has way longer longevity than hard drives or flash—we’re talking 30+ years if you store it properly, vs. like 5-10 for a standard hard drive. That’s perfect for film archives. Museums too—they’re digitizing old art, photos, and historical documents, and they need to keep those digital copies safe forever. Tape can handle that, and it doesn’t require constant maintenance like spinning hard drives do—you don’t have to power it on every month to keep it from failing, which saves even more money.

But let’s be real, I know what some of you are thinking: “This all sounds great, but what about tape’s bad rep from the old days? It was slow, right? Like, you couldn’t get to data quickly if you needed it.” Yeah, that was true 20 years ago. But the tech’s come so far now. LTO (Linear Tape-Open) drives, which are the standard now, can read data at over 300 MB per second. That’s faster than a lot of older hard drives, and if you’re accessing archival data, most of the time you don’t need it instantly anyway. If you do need to pull something off tape, it’s not like it used to be where you had to wait for the tape to spin up and rewind forever—modern libraries can slot tapes in and out in seconds, so you’re not waiting around. We’ve also got features now like compression, so you can fit two or three times more data on a single tape cartridge than you could a few years back. A standard LTO-9 tape holds 18 TB of compressed data, and LTO-10 is coming out next year with 25 TB native—way more compact and high-capacity than anyone expects.

Another thing I love about tape is how reliable it is for large datasets. When you’ve got a ton of data, the risk of corruption or failure goes up with every drive. Tape uses error correction tech that’s way more advanced than most other storage mediums for bulk data, ‘cause it’s built specifically for long-term archiving. We’ve had clients archive data for 10 years and pull it back perfectly, no lost files, no glitches. That’s not something you can say about a lot of cloud storage providers that change their formats every few years—you might have to convert your old data to a new format just to read it, which is a huge hassle.

Now, I know some of you are still on the cloud bandwagon, and that’s fine—tape isn’t replacing flash or cloud, it’s filling in the gaps where those two fall short. It’s the middle kid that everyone ignores but gets the job done when the oldest and youngest can’t. If your data has to be kept for compliance, needs to be offline for security, or is just massive bulk data that you don’t need to access every day, tape is way more cost-effective and reliable than any other option.

At our storage provider, we’ve worked with everything from small law firms that need to keep their client records safe to big pharmaceutical companies that need to archive clinical trial data for decades. We don’t try to sell tape for every use case—we just tell people when it’s the right fit. And 9 times out of 10, when clients come to us frustrated with their current storage costs or security gaps, tape is the solution they didn’t know they needed.

If you’re tired of overpaying for cloud storage you don’t use, or worried about your backup getting hacked, or need to move a massive amount of data fast, we can help. We’ll walk through your current setup, figure out exactly how much tape you need, and get you set up with drives and cartridges that fit your budget. No sales pitch, no confusing jargon—just straight talk about what works for your business.

If you want to chat more about how tape can save you money and keep your data safe, reach out to our team to start a purchasing conversation.
